Opal Ring Colours

The colour of an opal ring comes from the various scattering of light from the tightly packed silica spheres that make up the precious opal mineral.

Different arrangements of the silica spheres cause diffraction of light into different wavelengths, resulting in the various colours available in opal rings. The colours of opal rings can be so vibrant that they are often referred to as the 'fire'. Opal rings with a red fire are often the most expensive, but also the most striking, owing to the opal's fiery appearance.
